An Aubusson carpet

French Circa 1920s

11ft 2in x 5ft5in  :  340cm x 165cm
The perfume company established by Francoise Coty in 1904 of Paris decided to have a range of carpets made for their stores in the 1920s, though they should reflect the period and have lighter colour shades which were the fashion at the time.

The Art Deco had begun and Coty combined the Moderne with the traditional as in this Aubusson carpet of a traditional medallion of floral design with interwoven ropes, all resting on scattered floral details in subtle shades. The size is also unusual as in a gallery format, which would indicate a commissioned piece.
