A fine Bessarabian Kilim carpet

Ukrainian, circa 1880

13ft 5in x 11ft 3in  :  410cm x 350cm
Some of the most attractive kilims, inspired by European designs, were made in the southwestern Ukrainian province of Bessarabia. Most of the production was to satisfy the demand of the Russian aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie, who were furnishing their homes in the  French taste, especially in St.Petersburg.

Many households made kilims for their own domestic use. Organised workshops, set up as financial enterprises also existed but their production was limited to supplying large commissioned pieces, as in this present example. Handknotted pile carpets of the same design were also woven.

This carpet combines elements of western design and traditional folk motifs, which enables these Bessarabian kilms to be an alternative to the more formal French Aubusson carpets produced at the same period.
