An exceptional Bidjar carpet

Persia, circa 1890

21ft 9in  x  15ft 2in  :  663cm  x  462cm
Situated in Persian Kurdistan, the town together with the surrounding villages have, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, been making rugs and carpets of high quality, using lustrous wool and strong vegetable dyes.

The bold design of this carpet with enlarged scrolling and connecting stems, exemplifies the Gerus at its extreme, even verging towards a fantasy. The colouring of a dark blue background with white outlines heightens the drama. Bidjars are the most robust and hard wearing of all Persian carpets, the present example is in exceptional condition and with a finer weave, normally applied to small rugs as expensive to make this quality for large carpets, a coarser weave is more often used, sharpens the detail of the design. The exceptionally broad width allows the design to have an extra dimension allowing the design to breath, normally Gerus Bidjars have a narrow almost gallery format.

In our opinion, the present carpet is the most spectacular Bidjar we have ever encountered, though an antique piece the carpet can be used in both a traditional or modern interior design schemes and is in good condition retaining fresh original colour.
