A rare Moderne Movement carpet

French, circa 1935, designed by Violet Trefusis

8ft 9in x 7ft 2in  :  267cm x 218cm
Provenance: Violet Trefusis, La Tour, St. Loup de Naud, France.

Violet Trefusis (1894-1970), the daughter of Alice Keppel, a mistress of King Edward VII, had a celebrated love life, affairs with Vita Sackville-West and later with Winnaretta Singer, Princesse Edmond de Polignac, the American-born heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune, who had introduced her to the artistic beau-monde in Paris and bought her La Tour in St. Loup de Naud where at her weekend gatherings she entertained numerous political, artistic and musical figures: De Gaulle, Mitterant, Rubenstein, Dior, Balmain, Schiaparelli, Cocteau to name a but a few.

As a decorator herself, it was a wonderful challenge for Violet to decorate La Tour. The décor came to reflect aspects of her personality, audacity and passion for the exotic. Trefusis always gave special attention to colour, and the colours she chose were remarkably subtle, shades of honey and pearls prevailing. The present cream-coloured rug, was influenced by such famed designers as Eileen Gray and Marion Dorn, with a raised pile and is a unique piece made specific to the house. It is interesting to note that Andre Arbus’s carpets of the forties employed aspects of neo-classical design which resembled this example.
