A rare Art Deco/Modernist Movement rug

Designed by Marion Dorn, c1930.  Signed : Dorn.

6ft 6ins x 5ft8ins : 198cm x 178cm
When Marion Dorn (1896-1964) supplied her rugs for Syrie Maugham’s famous and iconic all white drawing room in 1927, she used shearing to make the fretwork/chevron design thus raising the pile creating a design in itself. The present rare rug is of similar technique which for Dorn’s rug designs is her most innovative work and should not be confused with the later Dorn carpets which are based on textile designs and are of no interest to us. A similar chevron design Dorn carpet was used by Maugham again in 1929 when she decorated the San Francisco home of Mrs Tobin Clark, the commission again became iconic for the use of various shades of white.

Her rugs were made at the Wilton Royal Carpet Factory, Wessex, commissions included:the Savoy Hotel, the Berkeley Hotel, both in London, the ocean liners: Orion and Queen Mary. In America she designed and supplied the carpet for the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House, Washington, and worked with Edward Fields.

The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and numerous museums worldwide, have in their collections examples of her rugs.
