A rare Chinese carpet

The earlier period of Art Deco saw the designs having floral motifs, remaining from the previous periods of the Art Nouveau and the Oriental influenced Aesthetic Movement, later the geometric Cubist forms were incorporated. Liberty's, the London department store, was at the forefront in stylish fashion and decoration for the home by providing exotic colonial goods which echoed these far distance lands, spices and opium dens.


The present rare carpet comes from China and has floral details on a vibrant golden yellow background which creates an exotic, luxurious effect and the design is influenced by silk textiles from of the period. The golden yellow colour was for the robes used exclusively by the emperors and it became a royal colour. The carpet is made with an exceptionally fine weave.
