An exceptionally rare Serapi carpet,

Persia, c1880.

10ft 2in   x  9ft 6in    :     310cm  x  290cm

Serapi is generally used to describe the finer made carpets from the Heriz district of North West Persia. They are named after the smaller town of Sarab, just south of Heriz. Generally they come with a prominent medallion, but very occasionally with an all over design.

The present carpet is even rarer than those with an all over design, here one sees a central branching stem with enlarged blossoming flowerheads and lattice leaves, the whole creating a fantastical ambiance. The drama is further heightened by the use of a natural white background.

This exceptional Serapi carpet is one of those rare instances which is unclassifiable as we have not encountered another example close to this design, fresh colouring and general good condition, as most Serapis either are worn or faded in colour and having a standard central medallion.  We dare to say but in our opinion the carpet is truly a unique piece.

The graphic qualities of the design with angular drawing, allows the carpet to be used in both a traditional classical setting as well as in modern interior design schemes. Carpets  of this calibre are not restricted in their application, proving that great design is timeless.
