An Oushak carpet

Circa 1890

11ft 7in x 8ft 1in  :  353cm x 246cm
Numerous carpets were woven in the western part of Turkey, mainly in the town of Oushak and surrounding areas, under the supervision of Armenian and Greek merchants and also European concerns who had their agents there, making for export to supply the new demand for carpets from the Western markets.

The bold palmettes with interlocking stems on a pale blue background and old coral border, creates an imposing yet subtle ambience, the enlarged scale of the design is taken from a larger carpet, here applied to a smaller format, which is the attraction as it heightens the drama. The Oushak was a popular style of carpet, as a relaxing mood, ideal for less formal rooms of the country houses.

The importation of these style of carpets were influential to the designs of William Morris and other Arts and Crafts artists, as the flat two dimensional perspective was in keeping with their Pre-Raphaelite principals.
The carpet is in exceptional original condition.
