 Sea-Nymphs and Dolphins

A handwoven tapestry, Tbilisi, Georgia, circa 1960s.

Height: 15ft 9in (482cm)    Width: 13ft 4in (407cm)
This remarkable tapestry was woven in Tbilisi, Georgia, in the 1960s, by students for a project at an art college. They have used a mixed technique of flatweave tapestry and hand knotted pile with additional tinsel highlights which creates a shimmering effect and add movement to the piece. The monumental large scale helps portray the vastness of the ocean and heightens the overall fantasy. The colouring of various shades of blue also emphasise the dimensional aspect of the depth of the ocean.

In Greek mythology sea-nymphs, which are larger than humans, are often depicted swimming with small dolphins, as in the present tapestry. Though not signed, this does not distract from the sheer beauty, leaving us in mystery and with a sense of wonder. One then further wonders as to the subject matter, are the figures travelling towards each other with the left pair curiously pass each other, whereas the right pair are moving in a circular direction towards each other, is this a start of a union?

In our opinion the tapestry is one of the most extraordinary tapestries we have ever encountered, truly a unique and mysterious work of art.
